About the film
After the sudden death of his wife, newly-widowed Steve moves himself and his young daughter Alysia to the vibrant landscape of a 1970’s San Francisco. Over the next two decades Steve must navigate pursuing his own passions – both personal and creative - with the demands of parenthood and his relationship with his daughter, as she blossoms into a young woman.
Based on the acclaimed 2013 memoir by Alysia Abbott, Fairyland sets its coming-of-age story against the backdrop of San Francisco’s bohemian culture through to the emergence of the AIDs epidemic. Director Durham and his exceptional cast avoid sentimentality to deliver a moving, warm and compassionate drama, exploring themes of family, love and loss during key historical moments of that time.
Festivals:
Sundance Film Festival 2023
‘The emotional force of Andrew Durham’s film is found in the two-step between parent and child as the sweep of LGBTQ+ history catches up.’
★★★★ The Irish Times
‘Though occasionally skirting sentimental melodrama, Durham has crafted an affectionate and unflinchingly human portrait of family with Fairyland. Holding everything together are breathtaking turns from Jones and McNairy.’
