German Film Club: The Lives of Others

About the film

In partnership with the Goethe-Institut Irland, Dolphin's Barn Library hosts the German Film Club on the third Wednesday of every month, featuring a screening of a German-language film with English subtitles. This month's film screening will take place on Wednesday 16 September at 6pm.

This month’s film is 'The Lives of Others', directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.

In East Germany (GDR) in 1984 the government operates mass surveillance of citizens. Gerd Wiesler, a Stasi operative, is ordered to spy on playwright Georg Dreyman. A listening device is placed in Dreyman’s apartment and Wiesel monitors it. He is puzzled as to why Dreyman is subject to scrutiny, as he is a model citizen with no history of dissent. Wiesel is disappointed to discover that it was ordered by the minister for culture for his own personal reasons.
