Love, Passion & Heartbreak
Join pianist Fionnuala Moynihan as she explores the stories behind the music, and the lives, loves and inspirations of some of history’s greatest composers.

Through a programme spanning Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Robert Schumann, Brahms and Clara Schumann, Fionnuala explores the powerful human emotions that lie behind some of the most celebrated works in the piano repertoire. From Bach’s lyrical miniatures and Beethoven’s deeply introspective final sonata movement to Chopin’s poignant Preludes, Liszt’s Liebesträume, Schumann’s tender Träumerei, and the deeply personal variations of Brahms and Clara Schumann, each work reveals a different facet of love and longing.

These extraordinary composers were, above all, human beings who experienced the full spectrum of emotion — from unbridled joy and devotion to longing, loss and despair. They loved, they suffered, and sometimes they lost in their striving “to love and be loved in return.”
Many of the works in this programme were written for loved ones, inspired by love unrequited, or born from a profound personal connection.

An evening of beautiful music, intimate stories and deeply human emotion, Love, Passion & Heartbreak invites us to hear these much-loved masterpieces not only as great works of art, but as expressions of the hearts and souls of the people who created them.
“If music be the food of love, play on.”
