Love Through the Seasons
Love Through the Seasons takes audiences on a captivating journey through history, music and poetry, marking the 1,000th anniversary of the birth of William the Conqueror and exploring the Norman story in Ireland.
Directed by internationally acclaimed violin soloist Harriet Mackenzie, the first half traces the journey of the Vikings and Northmen and their lasting influence on Ireland. A vibrant suite of North Sea folk songs, sets the scene, before a series of newly commissioned works by Irish, French and English composers brings key figures and stories from this remarkable period to life. History unfolds through music, connecting Ireland’s past with new musical voices from today.
After the interval, the focus turns from conquest and history to the deeply human story of William the Conqueror and Queen Matilda, exploring their lives through the changing seasons. Inspired by Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, the programme combines much-loved classical works with contemporary music and the award-winning poetry of Kate Wakeling, creating a vivid portrait of love, power, family and the passage of time.
From the freshness and freedom of spring in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, through the energy and intensity of Piazzolla’s Invierno Porteño, to new works by Ariel Pirrotti and Cecilia McDowall, each season reveals another chapter in the lives of William and Matilda.
Blending history, storytelling, poetry and music, Love Through the Seasons offers a richly immersive concert experience, bringing a thousand-year-old story vividly into the present.
Presented by NCH, Musici Ireland, Music in Action, and XYZ.
