Pinter-Wilde: A Double-Bill featuring One for the Road & A Florentine Tragedy

About the show

Balally Players are proud to present a double-bill of bold and captivating one-act plays by master playwrights, pairing gripping drama with dynamic comedy

One for the Road by Harold Pinter, directed by Wes Scully

One for the Road is a dark one-act play by Harold Pinter that explores power, political oppression and the abuse of authority in an unnamed totalitarian state. It follows Nicolas, a charming yet terrifying government interrogator, as he questions a detained family—Victor, his wife Gila, and their young son Nicky—across four scenes. Rather than depicting violence directly, the play builds tension through dialogue, silences and shifting tones, gradually revealing the family’s suffering. Nicolas moves between friendliness, humour and menace, making his civility especially unsettling, while the play as a whole examines fear, torture, authoritarian control and the consequences of absolute power.

One for the Road will represent Balally on the ADCI/DLI One-Act Drama Circuit 2026.

A Florentine Tragedy by Oscar Wilde, directed by Joseph Ryan Warner

Simone, a hapless and gratingly flamboyant merchant, arrives home to find his long-suffering wife Bianca in the company of esteemed nobleman (and notorious bachelor) Guido Bardi. Seemingly oblivious to any unsavouriness, Simone welcomes their guest with extreme graciousness, lulling all into a questionable sense of security that progressively unravels in outrageous and brutal fashion. A rarely-performed and ingeniously compact gem of a farce from Oscar Wilde, here experimentally staged with an energetic blend of Jacques Lecoq-based clown, commedia dell’arte, and the uncanny expressionism of Steven Berkoff, A Florentine Tragedy promises to both delight and startle – in (very) quick succession!
