The Whale Theatre: Greystones’ Cultural Hub

Tucked away on Theatre Lane in the centre of Greystones, the Whale Theatre is one of County Wicklow’s most distinctive cultural venues. Its modest scale is part of its charm: rather than separating performers from the audience, the theatre creates a warm, close-up experience where comedy, music, drama and film can feel unusually personal. For both local residents and visitors, it offers an appealing alternative to the larger theatres and concert halls of Dublin.

The Whale Theatre opened in September 2017 following the purchase of the unfinished property in 2014 and its redevelopment by founder Ross McParland. Since opening, it has developed into an important gathering place for Greystones and the surrounding communities, bringing professional performers, local groups and audiences together in a dedicated arts space close to the town’s shops, restaurants and transport links.

Inside, the beautifully refurbished venue has a capacity of approximately 130 people and covers around 400 square metres. Flexible staging and seating arrangements allow the room to change according to the occasion. Depending on the event, visitors may find traditional theatre seating, tables arranged in a relaxed cabaret style or a layout suited to talks, screenings and private functions. The theatre also has extensive lighting and sound equipment, helping it accommodate everything from an acoustic performance to a fully staged production.

Variety is central to the Whale Theatre’s identity. Its programme regularly embraces live music, theatre, stand-up comedy, film, talks, family entertainment and community events. This varied approach means that the venue is not intended for only one type of audience. A visitor might attend an intimate concert on one evening, a comedy show the next, and later return for a film screening, children’s activity or locally produced performance.

The venue’s role extends beyond ticketed weekend entertainment. The Whale Theatre aims to provide an accessible and lively arts hub for the wider community. Plans under its community-led management include developing programmes for children, young people and older residents, along with lunchtime concerts, arts and wellbeing activities, film events and opportunities for local participation. It is also associated with youth-focused initiatives, including Making Waves Youth Theatre and Music Generation Wicklow’s Band Lab.

A significant new chapter began when the Whale Theatre Company CLG, a not-for-profit and community-led organisation, took over the operation of the venue. Supported by a voluntary board and community expertise, the organisation’s mission is to maintain and grow the Whale as an accessible, vibrant performance and entertainment venue. This community model reflects the theatre’s broader purpose: it is not simply a room in which shows happen, but a local cultural resource intended to encourage creativity, participation and connection.

The theatre can also be hired for private and corporate occasions. Its adaptable auditorium, technical facilities and intimate atmosphere make it suitable for presentations, launches, workshops, celebrations and other events that benefit from a more memorable setting than a standard meeting room. Its flexible layout allows organisers to create an arrangement that suits the audience and style of each occasion.

The Whale Theatre is located beside Meridian Point in central Greystones, with public parking available in the adjacent Meridian Point car park. Its town-centre position also makes it easy to combine a visit with dinner, drinks, shopping or a walk along the Greystones seafront before or after a performance.

For visitors looking beyond Dublin’s larger venues, the Whale Theatre offers something refreshingly different. It combines professional facilities with the character of a small local theatre, providing an inviting place to discover performers, support community creativity and enjoy an entertaining evening in the heart of Greystones.
