What to expect

Rising high above the heart of Lusk village, Lusk Round Tower is not only one of the most complex round towers in Ireland, it’s also one of the best preserved. Standing at an impressive 34 metres (nine storeys) tall, this remarkable limestone structure dates back to the late 10th century and is among the most complex round towers in the country.

Uniquely, the round tower is physically connected to both a 15th-century square belfry tower and a 19th-century church, creating a fascinating architectural timeline spanning nearly 1,000 years. Inside the belfry, visitors can explore striking medieval tombs featuring sculpted effigies, including those of James Bermingham (1527) and the double-effigy tomb of Christopher Barnewall and his wife, Marion Sharl (1589).

The site is steeped in history and spirituality. It was originally founded by St. Maccullin, the 5th-century Bishop of Lusk appointed by Pope Gregory. The monastery was raided and plundered by the Vikings in 827 and 856. Interestingly, after the raids at Lusk, the Vikings then established a settlement known as Dubh Linn, known today as Dublin city.
