About the event
A public conversation on the life, legacy and continuing relevance of Michael Dillon (1915–1962) — the Irish doctor, writer, athlete and Buddhist monk who became the first recorded transgender man to undergo gender-affirming surgery.
Ruadhán Ó Criodáin, CEO of ShoutOut, is joined by exhibition curator Francis Fay to explore Dillon's extraordinary story and reflect on what his experiences still mean for the trans community today.
The conversation takes place in the Outhouse Theatre and runs for an hour. Admission is free, but places must be booked in advance.
It accompanies the exhibition Michael Dillon: Ireland's Extraordinary Trans Pioneer, which runs at Outhouse from 26 September to 8 October. Both are part of Dublin Festival of History 2026.
