As part of Arts Over Borders’ Beckett Biennale, we are delighted to present a landmark, ROI one-off performed reading of 'Waakin fur Ettlin fur Godot'. Set against the landscape of the Wicklow Mountains, this production centres around a specially commissioned sculpture for Ireland's Northern Literary Lands, Tree for Waiting for Godot, by Sir Antony Gormley. 
Experience Samuel Beckett's masterpiece transformed. Translated into Ulster-Scots by Frank Ferguson (Director of the Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies at Ulster University), this version offers an earthier, wryer, and deeply visceral experience of the play. This milestone cross-border event (following a performance in Antrim the previous evening) features two Northern actors playing Vladimir and Estragon meeting two Southern actors playing Pozzo and Lucky.

Featured Cast & Creatives: Directed by Jonathan Burgess, this exceptional production brings together an incredible line-up of stellar Irish acting talent:

  • Vladimir – Andrew Porter: Recognizable for his roles in acclaimed screen productions, including the feature film The Dig and the BBC Northern Ireland drama Hope Street.
  • Estragon – Patrick McBrearty: A standout talent known for his screen work in the historic drama series The Last Kingdom (Netflix) and the independent film The Dig.
  • Pozzo – Andrew Bennett: A veteran of Irish film and television, best known for his moving performance in the Academy Award-nominated feature The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin), as well as roles in Angela's Ashes and The Stag.
  • Lucky – Tadhg Murphy: A widely celebrated screen actor known for his major recurring roles in the epic historical drama Vikings, the pirate adventure series Black Sails, and the streaming hit Brassic.

What to Expect:

  • A Unique Format: An Arts Over Borders performed reading foregrounds the playwright’s text. Actors are fully rehearsed, directed and on-set, but retain the physical script in hand.
  • The Journey: Your experience begins with a short bus journey to a secret location, followed by a gentle 1–2 km walk to the performance location.
  • Seating: Seats will be provided at the performance location.

  • Departure Point: The Whale Theatre, Greystones.
  • Timeline: The bus departs strictly at 14:00 and returns at approximately 18:30.
  • What to Wear: Please dress in warm layers and wear suitable, sturdy footwear for country walking.
