About the theatre & ballet
VOLTA Theatre Company presents a hilarious and sharply satirical adaptation of James Joyce’s Cyclops. Leopold Bloom finds himself in the proverbial lion’s den of Barney Kiernan’s, where the “broadshouldered deepchested stronglimbed” Citizen reveals the ugly side of Irish nationalism. Inflammatory speeches over afternoon pints, attacks on the British Empire and “foreigners”, and an antisemitic rant against Bloom lead to a comic yet unsettling confrontation.
