Embroidery and Tapestry Weaving Workshop with Alexis Bernstorff

Embroidery and Tapestry Weaving Workshop with Alexis Bernstorff

What to expect

Embroidery Workshop with a focus on the techniques used on the Ros Tapestry. These will be expanded upon and used for experimentation. Also a wider range of the many embroidery techniques used throughout the world can be explored.

Crewelwork embroidery is one of many ancient forms of embroidery which uses woollen thread on linen fabric. The techniques used create a slightly raised effect and the wool gives great vibrancy to the colour of the thread. Traditional crewelwork has been used to decorate walls, create bed hangings and curtains often featuring the ‘tree of life’ motif of large curving foliated branches with flowers and birds.

The techniques can be applied to any design –decorative, figurative or abstract. The capacity of embroidery to create textural surfaces, perspective and volume has got great potential. The expressive possibilities are great and waiting to be explored!
