The Art of Attention: Poetry and the Living World

What to expect

What happens when we slow down and look deeply at the world around us?

This generative poetry workshop explores attention as a creative practice — and as a form of care. Together, we’ll read and discuss contemporary poems which engage with the natural world and the climate crisis, and consider how environmental change is experienced not only as a global concern, but through the places we call home and the communities to which we belong.

Through guided writing prompts, participants will be invited to explore their own relationships with landscape and place, drawing on memory, observation and imagination. We’ll write to take stock of the changes around us, and what — and whom — we choose to notice and care for.

This workshop is an opportunity to reflect, experiment and generate new work in a supportive environment. You don’t need to have written poetry before: whether you’re an experienced poet or simply curious about creative writing and the natural world, all are welcome. Just come prepared to look closely, listen carefully and see where your attention takes you.

Grace Wilentz
Grace Wilentz’s first collection, The Limit of Light (The Gallery Press, 2020), was named a book of the year in The Irish Independent and The Irish Times. Her second collection, Harmony (Unfinished) was a finalist for the 2024 Farmgate Café National Poetry Award. Grace has received support from the Arts Council including literature bursaries and a Next Generation Artist Award.
