Whale Song: Folk, Funk & Fury

About the show

Three Bands, One Night - Get ready for a night that refuses to sit still. We're bringing together three of Ireland's exciting emerging acts for a Grassroots Artists show that spans fragile folk, full-throttle punk-ballads, and funk-soul swagger — all under one roof.

BRIARS (Cork City) open the night with their singular blend of alt-indie folk and trad, a sound that swings from delicate to raucous and back again. Festival favourites at Electric Picnic, Galway Folk Fest and more, BRIARS have picked up glowing press from Hot Press and airplay on RTÉ and BBC Radio — and it's easy to hear why once you catch them live.

PORTER BOYS SOCIAL CLUB bring the chaos. Formed by the Marron brothers out of south Monaghan by way of mid-Louth wizardry, this three-piece has been compared by Hot Press to "Woody Guthrie joined The Velvet Underground" — though the band themselves reckon it's closer to a badger fight. Expect pageantry, banjos, and ballads turned punk-catchy, from a band already racking up over 10,000 TikTok followers.

SLAPNECK close out the night with six-piece Wicklow funk/soul/rock energy. Since their sold-out Anseo debut with "Botticelli," they've been building serious momentum, with new singles "Good News" and "Premonitions" landing this autumn.

One night. Three sounds. Zero filler. Don't miss it.
