Whale Trad Fest: Rithim | The Sugarloaf Sessions

Whale Trad Fest: Rithim | The Sugarloaf Sessions

About the show

Rithim Traditional Orchestra

The afternoon event opens with Wicklow's very own Rithim Traditional Orchestra, established in 2016 to commemorate the centenary of the Easter Rising and going strong ever since. The group have played all over Ireland, including on the main stage at Fleadh Ceoil and at the Creative Connexions in Sitges, Spain. They bring together some of the county’s most gifted young traditional musicians to perform newly composed music in the traditional style by their leaders and mentors Tim Doyle, Rachel Duffy and Gerry O'Donnell. Expect fresh, energetic sets that are rooted in the tradition and show how much talent the next generation has.

The Sugarloaf Sessions

After the Rithim performance, the music moves from the stage to the room with the Sugarloaf Sessions, a relaxed session for adult players of all traditional Irish instruments. Established in 2025, the Sugarloaf Sessions is an ongoing musical experience delivered via the TuneClub app, combining digital learning with physical meet-ups, the aim of the experience is to create a welcoming community of learning. The group meet regularly at Duff's Bar in Bray and receive expert tuition via the TuneClub app, which is open for any player of traditional Irish music to learn new tunes and be session-ready.
