Herzog Park

Herzog Park

Overview

Herzog Park is a small village park close to the centre of Rathgar in south Dublin. It has a playground and a multi-use games court, and is home to Rathgar Tennis Club, with 10 all-weather floodlit courts.

The park sits in an old quarry and is named after Chaim Herzog, the Dublin-raised President of Israel.

Tennis and play

Rathgar Tennis Club is a members' club, but non-members can book courts: contact the club for details. The club has 10 floodlit all-weather courts, a practice wall and a clubhouse. The playground and the MUGA court are open to everyone.

History

The site was once a quartz and limestone quarry. Dublin Corporation took it on a long lease in 1954, and the Parks Department laid out the park in 1985, when it was called Orwell Quarry Park. It was renamed in 1995 in honour of Chaim Herzog, President of Israel from 1983 to 1993. Herzog was born in Belfast and raised in Dublin, the son of Ireland's Chief Rabbi, Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog.

Getting there

Herzog Park is off Orwell Road, Dublin 6, a few minutes' walk from Rathgar village, with Dublin Bus routes on Rathgar Road. There is a pay and display car park and a bring centre just outside the park. Bushy Park is about 15 minutes' walk west, and the River Dodder is close by.
