Poppintree Park
Overview
Poppintree Park is a large regional park between Ballymun, Finglas and Glasnevin in north Dublin. It has GAA, soccer and rugby pitches, changing facilities, an outdoor amphitheatre and a playground.
It is also rich in nature, with wetlands, wildflower meadows, a feature pond and a native tree trail, and was named Best Public Park at the LAMA Awards in 2012.
Nature
The park's wetlands and pond also help to reduce local flooding. Wildflower meadows, native hedging and tree planting have raised its biodiversity: surveys have recorded frogs, 27 species of birds and four species of bats. The Poppintree Park Native Tree Trail, which you can download from Dublin City Council, picks out 15 native trees.
History
Dublin Corporation proposed a 50-acre regional park at Poppintree in 1976, and local residents' associations helped to shape its design.
Getting there
The park is west of Ballymun town centre, Dublin 11, towards Finglas. Dublin Bus routes serve Ballymun and Finglas. Ballymun Library is nearby, and Balcurris Park and the Poppintree IKEA green space are close by.
