Sandymount Green
Overview
Sandymount Green is the small, triangular green at the heart of Sandymount village, surrounded by cafés, shops and pubs. It is ringed by old horse chestnut trees and has two bronze busts of Nobel prize-winning poets.
W.B. Yeats was born at No. 5 Sandymount Avenue, a short walk away, and Seamus Heaney lived in Sandymount for many years.
What to see
The bust of W.B. Yeats faces a later bust of Seamus Heaney, unveiled in 2016. Together they make the green a stop on many literary walks of Dublin.
History
The green dates from the early 1800s, when it was first railed in and laid out as a local green. The Corbett family planted the horse chestnut trees around its edge in the 19th century, and Dublin Corporation took over the green as a public park in the 1960s.
Getting there
Sandymount Green is in the centre of Sandymount village, Dublin 4. Sandymount DART station is about five minutes' walk away. Sandymount Strand and the promenade are a few minutes east, and the Aviva Stadium is about 15 minutes' walk.
