Cabbage Patch

Cabbage Patch

Overview

The Cabbage Patch is a small public park at New Street Gardens in the Liberties, a few minutes from St Patrick's Cathedral. It has a multi-use games area and a story that goes back more than 350 years.

The land was once a cabbage garden, and later a burial ground for Dublin's Huguenot community.

History

In 1649 soldiers rented this land from a local landowner, Philip Fernley, and grew cabbages on it, which gave the place its name. In 1666 the Lady Chapel of St Patrick's Cathedral was given to the Huguenots, French Protestant refugees, as a place of worship. In 1681 they were leased a strip of land in the Cabbage Gardens for a cemetery, consecrated in 1685.

Many of the Liberties' merchants and tradespeople were buried here until the cemetery closed to burials in 1878. Dublin Corporation opened the old burial ground as a public park in 1982.
