Cabinteely Library

Cabinteely Library

Overview

Cabinteely Library is a renovated Carnegie library from 1912, set in a large walled garden in the middle of Cabinteely village. With its red and blue tiled roof, leaded windows and copper cupola, it is one of the village's best-known landmarks.

Temporarily closed

Cabinteely Library closed in August 2026 for energy upgrade works, with reopening estimated for November 2026. Check with dlr Libraries before you visit. In the meantime the nearest branches are Ballyogan Library and Deansgrange Library.

History and architecture

The library was designed by the architect Rudolph Maximilian Butler, who also designed the Carnegie libraries in Dundrum and Shankill. Built in the then-fashionable Arts and Crafts style, it stands in a garden enclosed by its original granite walls. Two cast-iron gates open onto paths leading to the entrance, which has a dressed granite surround and a bay window to one side, making it one of Butler's most successful library designs.

At 179 square metres it is the second-smallest library in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, with a garden seating area outside. The current works bring a full rewire, solar panels, a heat pump and new accessible automatic doors and porch.
