Shankill Library

Shankill Library

Overview

Shankill Library is a single-storey Carnegie building from 1912, set behind a front garden on a quiet road near the centre of Shankill village. The smallest of the dlr libraries, it has also served as a courthouse and even a temporary church over its long life.

Temporary home during works

While conservation and energy upgrade works are carried out on the Carnegie building, Shankill Library is running from a temporary space in Stonebridge Community Centre, Stonebridge Grove, D18 FH04, open Monday to Thursday from 10am to 4pm. dlr Libraries expects the works to continue until late 2026, so check before you visit.

History and architecture

Built in 1912 and influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, the library was designed by Rudolph Maximilian Butler, who also designed the libraries in Cabinteely and Dundrum. It was renovated in 1978 and again in the 2000s. At 165 square metres it is the smallest public library in the county.
