Overview

dlr LexIcon is an award-winning, five-storey library and cultural centre that opened in Dún Laoghaire in 2015. Ireland's largest and most visited public library, it welcomes around 1,300 people a day and holds over 135,000 items, along with the dlr Municipal Gallery, a Studio Theatre and a café.

More than a library

Overlooking Moran Park in the centre of Dún Laoghaire, the LexIcon has 165 study spaces, more than 60 public computers and a floor devoted to Local Studies and Irish authors. It is also home to the dlr Municipal Gallery, run by the dlr Arts Office, a Studio Theatre, a Project Room, a Maker Space Lab, the Roots Café, an outdoor terrace and a pond.

Its programme runs all year: book clubs, film clubs, weekly storytimes in English and Irish, Lego and gaming clubs, talks, exhibitions and festival events. Class visits and group tours are welcome when booked in advance.

Getting there

The LexIcon is on Haigh Terrace, a short walk from Dún Laoghaire DART station and the harbour. The grounds of the neighbouring Royal Marine Hotel are private.

  • Free to visit, and library membership in Ireland is free.
  • On Sundays (12 noon to 4pm) the library is self-service only.
