Dublin Castle has a long and rich history that stretches back to the Middle Ages. The castle was founded in 1204 by King John of England and has played an important role in the political and cultural life of Ireland ever since. Over the centuries, the castle has been the seat of British rule in Ireland, the center of English administration in Ireland, and the home of the Irish government. In 1922, following the establishment of the Irish Free State, the castle was handed over to the new government and has since been used for a variety of purposes, including as a venue for state functions and as a tourist attraction. Today, the castle is managed by the Office of Public Works and is open to the public for tours and other events.
Dublin Castle has been at the heart of the history in Irish life- it was the British administration centre in Ireland for about 700 years, untill 1922. Built in 13th century, it witnesed the most important historical moments in Irish history. Dublin Castle is one of Dublin’s oldest buildings, which has been added to and altered over the centuries and is an attractive mixture of styles.
In 11 acres area there are: Chapel Royal, Garda Museum, Chester Beatty Library, Revenue Museum, the most important apartment in all country State Apartments plus gift and coffee shop. Beautiful, elegant and important to Ireland buildings, and well maintained area.
Today it is used for State functions as well as many important State receptions and also as a place to inaugurate country’s President.
There is an option for self-guided tour and guided tour. We highly recommend you the guided tour and for just an extra euro you’ll leave this place with bigger picture of Dublin in your head.
Dublin Castle is a Dublin attraction with a nice garden and seating places. You will be sure to get the nice view of Dublin castle and the wide green spacious area all year round.
There are free attractions and for some of them there is an entry charge, but you can also just check out free parts and the grounds, including a beautiful big garden with plenty of sitting places for those who want to relax or discuss the visit and share impressions. The grounds of Dublin Castle alone are worth a visit.
