Irish Museum of Modern Art & Royal Hospital

On warm days, small groups relax on the meadows that surround IMMA before heading inside to take in all the modern art.
It serves as a gathering place for aspiring artists, who frequent it for making classes, lectures held by artists, and much of Pablo Picasso.

Founded in 1684 Royal Hospital was a military hospital till 1928, but then it was not used for about 50 years. After Irish got their Independence, it was a though of turning a building into Irish parliament, but instead it was used as a storage facility for The National Museum of Ireland. In 1980s the restoration took place for a couple of years, and it was reopened in 1991. Another restoration in 2012–2013 put more sparkle and brought this beautiful building back to life and now Irish Modern Art Museum serves as country’s leading national institution for the collection and presentation of modern and contemporary art, where you can discover famous Irish and international artist’s collections and exhibitions, with an excess of 4500 works, 1650 of which are permanent. The permanent museum’s exhibition homes paintings from Joan Miro Pablo Picasso, Gilbert and George, Marina Abramovia, Peter Halley, Rebecca Horn, Peter Doig, Kathy Predergast, Juan Munoz, Tony O’Malley, Francesco Clemente and others. To make the tour more enjoyable and exciting, it is constantly topped up by regular temporary art exhibitions. The Old Man’s House exhibition tells you the story of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, the 17th century architecture example and one of the most iconic Dublin buildings.

Half an hour walk from Dublin centre, and a short distance from Kilamnham Goal Museum, it’s a peaceful and lovely place in Dublin to go for a stroll. With an amazing garden, floral schemes and trimmed trees, coffee and book shops, lots of sitting places and other great facilities, the place is a real peace of heaven in Dublin. On the grounds, there are 2 graveyards, one of them being the oldest graveyard in Dublin, this only ads more history to this place to be visited in Dublin.

Outside, on the ground of Royal Hopital, concerts and gigs take place here as well, with lots of food and drinks offered on the site.

A Dublin attraction for everyone, as you can have a nice peaceful hour in the gardens, or come for a gig, museum inside and with other Dublin attraction like Kilamnham Goal Museum, Guinness Storehouse and The War Memorial Gardens, it could be the best plan for sightseeing for a full day. After the gig, you can continue your party heading to Temple Bar, which is 2.5km away.
